Institute for the Habits of Mind

Art Costa and Bena Kallick, Cofounders and Directors of the Institute for the Habits of Mind, will introduce us to the Habits of Mind, and why they provide a shift in perspective of what’s important in learning. Traditionally, parents and educators are impressed with how many answers students know. Although the right answers are important, the critical attribute of efficacious human beings is not only having right answers or information, but also knowing how to act on it. With Habits of Mind, we focused on how students behave when they don’t know the answer! As we consider the uncertain environment in which our students will take a role, we need to ask: Are we preparing students for a life of tests, or for the tests of life?

Habits of Mind are dispositions that are skillfully and mindfully employed by characteristically intelligent, successful people when they are confronted with problems, the solutions to which are not immediately apparent.
Substantial research indicates that students prosper intellectually, socially and emotionally as they learn the Habits of Mind, teachers form stronger bonds with their colleagues, schools develop a culture of mindfulness, and individual teachers report renewed dedication, energy and excitement about their teaching.  All this takes time and the journey towards internalization of the Habits of Mind is never fully complete. All of us can get better at the Habits of Mind.
Participants will:
  • Recognize sixteen indicators and Habits of Mind
  • Develop a common vision of the outcomes of a thoughtful school
  • Incorporate the Habits of Mind into all content areas and subject matter
  • Learn coaching strategies to provide mentoring for colleagues
Inclusive cost for conference registration and materials will be $250.
Morning and afternoon coffee breaks will be provided, but lunch will be on your own.
